As Malaysia eases into an extended phase of conditional movement control order (CMCO) beginning on the 13th May 2020 until 9th June 2020, we shall witness the gradual return of new normal activities among fellow Malaysians in many non-essential sectors in the country. Face Mask As New Norm Fashion The Coronavirus epidemic that is now spreading across the country makes the use of face masks now a part of permanent appearance for the public if they are outdoors or in crowded areas due to the rapid spread of Covid-19 virus from one individual to another. According to Dr. Navid Nabarro in a special envoy of the World Health Organization (WHO) also said that people should get used to the ‘new reality or norms’ by always wearing face masks. In educating the public as they gradually enter into the new normal, it is imperative that any advice given by the government to all Malaysians is guided by the best scientific evidence because this will help control Covid-19 infection, thus preventing a surge whilst instilling confidence among the general public. In general, every living thing on this earth has to go through a process of adaptation to meet the needs. In the context of the Covid-19 epidemic, self-adjustment still occurs if individuals accept or reject new norms. Recommended Type of Face Mask To Wear If we look at the surrounding conditions, many people choose to wear a 3-layer disposable face mask. However, there are actually different types of masks for healthy people and unhealthy people. For healthy individuals, the World Health Organization (WHO) encourages the use of fabric face masks consisting of waterproof fabric (exterior), filter (centre) and water absorption fabric (inside). Apart from the types of face masks that have been described above, there is another type of face mask categorized under "non-surgical" which is increasingly on the market. Cloth type masks are among the most popular types and are increasingly becoming a choice among the general public as they look more stylish to be made as a complement to the appearance. Indirectly, the use of this cloth face mask also actually helps in preserving our environment or is considered "eco-friendly". Why Face Mask Is Necessary? Wearing a mask is very important when we go outside of the house during the Covid-19 pandemic. We should choose a safe mask to help prevent respiratory fluid from spreading into the air and bad bacteria from getting into the breath. Masks should be used as part of a comprehensive strategy of measures to suppress transmission and save lives because by wearing a face mask in public is helping to control infection by Covid-19. The results of laboratory clinical studies also prove that the use of face mask can reduce the splash of respiratory fluid when worn by covering the mouth and nose. Therefore, the use of fabric face mask is very important when in a crowded situation where social distance cannot be done at that time. According to the Senior Minister of Defense, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob stated that among the public places that are required to wear face masks are in public transport, crowded places such as supermarkets, tourist attractions, cinemas and so on. This is a strategy to curb COVID-19 infection. In accordance with the teachings of Islam too, we need to practice new norms through health care through the use of face and nose masks as part of a new appearance as a deterrent to the cause of infection. Destiny is indeed destiny, but curbing the cause of the infection is necessary for Muslims so that we can move from a bad destiny to a better destiny.
