It is unbelievable that the 19 years old suspect, who was a friend of the victim, was willing to kill her friend cruelly and that she was committed to performing a homicide alone. Recently when the country was facing an increasingly contagious Covid-19 pandemic, public were shocked by an incident about a 19-year-old student who was accused of killing her own best friend. This issue is hotly debated among Malaysians because the case is still ongoing. The cases of homicides make it seem that those of us who hear it have been dragged into the incident and partially overshadowed by this tragedy. The tragic story that happened to Siti Nur Surya, a girl from Terengganu who was found dead in the living room of her house with losing her left wrist due to her best friend's actions. The victim was found by her sister at 2.30 p.m. and her mother suffering from brain cancer witnessed this tragic scene. However, the police were able to shortlist the suspect in a short time after the suspect came to the police station for testify and suspect gave doubtful answers during questioning session. It is unbelievable that the 19 years old suspect, who was a friend of the victim, was willing to kill her friend cruelly and that she was committed to performing a homicide alone. Suspect is still undergoing court trial to determine her sentence. Homicides usually have a variety of motives such as politic, jealousy or envy, revenge, scandal, self-defenses and others. It has done in various ways and among the most popular method are by using firearms or sharp weapons such as knife.
Today society is so cruel because it is willing to kill innocent people in such a terrible and heart-breaking way. Some people would cut off a limb or burn it to hide the authenticity of a person. Additionally, it is even sadder that some of them are also willing to take the lives of their parents, siblings, relatives and good friends without the slightest sense of humanity. As an ordinary person, to save yourself from danger and threat is just instinct. Some can do something unexpected when the situation is urgent. The question is, what motivates a person to act aggressively without thinking wisely and the risks he or she will face? Professor of Family Law, Women and Children, Faculty of Law, UKM, Prof Datuk Noor Aziah Mohd Awal, said the influence of drugs, mental disorders, panic and fear can cause one to be cruel and become a sadistic killer to her or his victim. Based on the statistics released by the Department of Statistics in 2018, the criminal case, categorized murder recorded a total of 323 cases. It shows a very high rate of murder cases in just one year. However, homicides can be avoided by controlling your emotions wisely. Al-Quran in Surah Ar-Ra'd verse 28 means: (that) those who believe and whose hearts find comfort in the remembrance of Allah. A study conducted in 2010 by Fariza stated awaken feelings and emotions is an internal sense of the response to a situation, events or experience. These emotions will affect their way of thinking. If the way of thinking is wrong, then the action will be wrong. Besides, a study conducted in 1998 by Goleman stated the ability to identify, assess and control one’s own emotions, the emotion of others and that of the group. Acting rashly or without caution can lead to mistakes and can often damage relationships with clients or colleagues. In the Qur'an Allah also emphasized in surah An-Nisa', verse 93: And whoever kills a believer intentionally, then his recompense is Hell, he remains in it and Allah is angry with him and curses him and provides a great punishment for him. As a result, we can conclude that killing is a cruel and despicable thing. Everyone will get retribution for what he or she has done, whether in this world or the hereafter as well. Last but not least, the harm or danger associated with this act of murder not only affected the suspect and the victim but also on their family and the community. Therefore, we as Malaysians who adhere to the National Principle (Rukun Negara), namely Belief in God and the Rule of Law, should stay away from things that are against religion and the country because the choice is in our hands.
