Nowadays everything is just at your fingertips. This covers all matters including the field of education. Education is one of the interests in the life of every individual in Malaysia. Various ways can be applied to obtain an education. In this pandemic era, everyone can relate on e-learning session especially students. Does e-learning bring benefits on student academic? E-learning is defined as learning that is delivered enabled or mediated using electronic technology for the explicit purpose of training in organizations. In 1929, Alfred North Whitehead, The Aims of Education, Macmillan stated that education is a preparation for battling with the immediate experience of life, a preparation by which to qualify each immediate moment with relevant ideas and appropriate actions. So, what can be linked here, we can see the world is now at war with the dangerous pandemic of Covid-19. This has slightly changed the activities of our daily lives including the field of education. However, the teaching and learning process at the school or institute level is still underway in this new norm. The various e-learning methods are used today as all students need to learn from home. The uses of E-learning The existence of e-learning in information technology has become an alternative to distance learning. Online learning is more interesting because it is in the form of multimedia, which is a combination of text, graphics, sound, video, and animation. According to Kaplan and Haenlein in 2010, the use of social media also used towards the digital world and even it makes the learning process is more interesting and productive. What can be further explained is that e-learning has many productive effects on the teacher and students. The use of e-learning is to make it easier for instructors or lecturers to upload notes, exercises, and matters related to their lectures. It can also save lecturers time as they can make the latest announcements and news quickly and easily. Besides, it also indirectly gives exposure to students about cyber knowledge and further develops the intellectual level of students. In addition, e-learning is cost effective technique compared to traditional learning system. For example, both lecturers or students can save their financial because they did not need to print out their learning materials.
In the new norm now, many teachers and lecturers have been actively moving to provide online teaching materials or online learning. This includes the use of Zoom, Google Classrooms, Microsoft teams and even live on Facebook to carry out learning activities. The closure of schools and universities during this pandemic can provide an opportunity for students to maximize their involvement in new learning methods as well as to know the potential of each medium can be used as a learning method. Web-based teaching and learning are one of the mediums that can improve student’s learning level and can also launch the teaching process by teachers in a particular lecturer at all universities. Learning methods based on the web can help students complete the given task at a time set efficiently. According to Will Richardson that he stated in 2010, teaching and learning methods with the online web will make the student being more positive and trying to learn information literacy skills by using the internet. The use of this online web media technology not only provides many benefits to the process of teaching and learning but it also can create good social relationships between students and educators. In addition to the existence of E-learning, there is also m-learning that is used in online learning. Have you ever heard of M-learning? In 2000, Sharples stated that m-learning which means “Mobile Learning”, media technology that capable of connecting lecturers and students in real-time or virtual world to appreciate the teaching process and support lifelong learning. This is very easy to do through affordable gadgets especially mobile phones which are now have become one of the necessities to the students and also help the student to use the m-learning method in the learning process. Students who study online classes get time to study according to their own schedule. They can work as they want either in the morning or late night. Students do not have to commute to campus, so they can save time and can study wherever they want. They also do not have to go to university’s library because course is always accessible online, so they save more time. Students can learn at their own pace in convenience situation. So, online education can help students to balance the time between studying and with family.
“In my opinion, the use of online learning methods can further increase the productivity of student discipline in terms of completing assignments. This is because attending online classes saves a lot of time for a student because they no longer have to rush to face-to-face classes or face crowded roads and so on. So, a student's time becomes unlimited. In addition, it can indirectly cultivate the nature of discipline in completing the assigned tasks according to the set time," added Nur Husnina binti Md Sofi, year 4 student of Faculty of Language and Communication, University Sultan Zainal Abidin.
